what motivates english speaking adults to learn another language in higher learning 2018 doi
Jacob is a linguist who specializes in Phonetics and Phonology. He has a principal's degree in Phonetics and Phonology.
Learning a second language is never piece of cake. Learning English language as a 2d language is fifty-fifty less easy. Particularly if you lot are learning English outside of an English language-speaking country. For example, English language learners in African countries like Nigeria, Republic of ghana, Liberia, Zambia, Malawi, and some other African countries face up a lot of challenges because English is non the native linguistic communication of these countries. Just every bit at that place are bug faced in learning English language as foreign linguistic communication, and then in that location are challenges in learning English every bit 2d language.
These English linguistic communication learners often face the following challenges.
1. Unqualified Teachers
This is the well-nigh significant and the most overlooked trouble. What makes this trouble so hard to solve is that, since many communities are English linguistic communication learners, they cannot determine who is a good English language teacher and who isn't. Whatever the teacher says, whether correct or incorrect, will exist taken as correct by the learner.
This has led to a lot of defoliation among learners because different teachers tell them different things. One of the principal causes of this problem is the difficulty teachers have translating from their native languages. For instance, the give-and-take 'cup' is pronounced by different teachers as either [kap], [kop], or with a vowel sound that does non exist in English. For instance, the audio /Λ/ does not exist in the sound systems of many African languages, so even teachers sometimes take issues pronouncing information technology.
2. Express Learning Environments
When I talk about limited learning environments, I'thousand non referring to the weather, the availability of furniture in the classrooms, or the location of the school. While all of these factors can affect learning, in learning English language, what happens outside of course matters most. In almost cases, students only make an effort to speak proper English in the classroom when they are under supervision. Moreover, students don't always hear people around them speaking proper English. Equally a result, it becomes more difficult to acquire correct English.
Learning materials refer to items that assistance in the learning process. Books may be a necessary cloth, but books are non plenty by themselves. Sound tools are also needed. Equally observed in a higher place, if a educatee sees a audio symbol in a book, how does he/she know how to pronounce it? The fact is, students of English Linguistic communication graduate into teachers of the English language without ever getting to hear the right pronunciation by a native speaker.
Students too written report haphazardly. They have books to read but they can't tell how certain words are said. How would a educatee know how to pronounce the give-and-take 'ewe'? He/she must hear the right pronunciation from his/her teacher or from a native speaker of English. Students tend to learn from movies they watch but they often larn the wrong things considering movies contain slang and dialects that are non appropriate in many forms of advice.
4. Students Don't Take Their Report Seriously
In this case, students oftentimes think that the same English they speak at home or on the street is the same they volition write in their exams. However, because communication doesn't have to be grammatically correct in gild to be intelligible, students don't always e'er bide by the rules they learned in school and therefore do not go fully educated and/or pass their tests.
Information technology is also the example that students don't written report English every bit much every bit they study other subjects. In near cases, students study English only in the classroom when the teacher is educational activity. Afterwards the class, they drop their books and wait for the adjacent class. They don't report pronunciation, they don't study essay writing, and they don't make an effort to learn new words. They bring every niggling problem to the teacher during classes, even things they could only look it upward in the lexicon. When learners brand mistakes and are corrected, they often say "It is not my language afterwards all." This greatly affects their power to learn English language.
Three Other Problems
Even with qualified teachers, adequate materials, and exposure to native English speakers, at that place are still a number of problems that any ESL student volition face.
i. Over-Utilize of Native Language in the Classroom

Students learn another language all-time when they're forced to use it. Teachers must exist vigilant nigh requiring students to communicate in English language and only in English language—fifty-fifty if they're only talking to each other. If you lot know the students' native language, pretend in the classroom that you don't—as that will forcefulness them to brand requests and reply to questions in English. This problem comes from the cultural demands of the family unit and guild.
2. Students Become Likewise Dependent on the Teacher
Role of learning anything means figuring out how to solve problems on your own. If a student goes to the teacher with every little problem s/he runs into, then the student volition never be able to learn the language on their own. If students insist that they don't know how to say or exercise something on their ain, they need to be reassured that they actually can with positive feedback and encouragement.
iii. Strong Students Boss the Class
No thing how well students are sorted, there volition even so be differences in how much students know and how rapidly they can learn. Setting the pace of the form to keep up with the strongest students volition leave the weaker ones behind. Weaker students shouldn't be forgotten in classroom discussions and activities.
The Solution
For students who are willing to put in the effort, there are a number of steps they can take to better their English skills.
- They must exist extra careful to be certain to use correct materials recommended by a reliable teacher of English.
- They must brand a deliberate and conscious effort to learn with or without a class instructor.
- The student should get audio materials and then he/she can hear the correct pronunciation of sounds and words.

Unqualified teachers: the strength could be that as much as there are unqualified teachers, there won't be adequate learning.
The trouble of unqualified teachers could be trouble of government negligence. If the educational system is inadequately funded, certainly, just half-baked teachers volition exist produced; in which case the regime shares the blame.
Express learning environment: students are not exposed enough to English speaking, they rely more than on their mother tongue. In some churches and mosques for case, communication is in native languages. That certainly limits learner's exposure to English linguistic communication. Once again, talking about the weakness of this point, the authorities has a paw in it; the religious centers too, and traditional institutions; they all contribute to limiting the learning environs. Equally part of the limitation of this point, once again, witting and drastic learners can get around it by ensuring that they are not limited by those factors.
Inadequate learning materials: In learning phonology, for instance, audio visual facilities are important merely they are hardly available. That affects the teaching and learning of phonology. Still, students could have access to the facilities but are not motivated to using them in learning. Poor maintenance of the facilities could also contribute to the problem of inadequate learning materials

Pls that'south incorrect, certain Nigeria has well-nigh 500 dissimilar ethnic groups with their various languages; but they were colonised by the British. As a effect, the official linguistic communication of Nigeria is English language. There are even Alot if children in that location who can speak but English language.

Janisa from Earth on August 07, 2018:
I completely agree with y'all and recollect that it is a combination of these issues that forestall students from learning successfully. In many countries, students spend years learning English or some other language and can barely make a sentence in that language. I think that a pupil needs to be motivated and willing to put in the endeavor in club to be able to learn a linguistic communication.
Abdelmoneim Hassan Adam on March 31, 2018:
Un-qualified Teacher, inadequate learning materials, poor learning environment, and lack of delivery to learning interact with each other and result in impede language acquisition. Unfortunately, all those barriers you can find them in developing countries such as KSA and Sudan.
Natasha from USA on July 06, 2016:
I would also add together that adult English language learners may exist confused if their native language uses a construction significantly different from English language. For example, my Russian learners had more trouble with certain concepts than my Castilian-speaking learners did.
Many learners genuinely do desire to learn English as well every bit they can. One problem I encountered, though, is that some students didn't want to practice outside class, and didn't want to do homework. So naturally, they were behind when nosotros moved to a new topic the post-obit calendar week. I'd often take to spend valuable class fourth dimension reteaching the same concept.
I had to tell some of my more than enthusiastic students who would correct their classmates during grouping review, "I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to help, but please permit me correct anything that needs to be corrected. I don't want anyone to be confused." During individual review, still, I asked students to work together and ask one some other before asking me.

I teach students learning English. I remember it is very stereotypical to put that they accept a lack of commitment to learning. Of the over 80 students I teach, very few accept a self-approbation toward their education and I run into just as many of their American peers who truly lack such commitment! My students, particularly those who were born in some other country are very hard workers. Their parents desire their child to learn and back up teachers. They await their child to work hard and be respectful. Now, are at that place exceptions to this rule. Definitely, only again percentage wise it is equal to our less than that our their English speaking counterparts.
The biggest challenge that faces these students is high stakes testing, stereotypes similar these and lack of preparation for our teachers.

Reading is good "Passive" way of improving vocabulary, just when you are resorting to making lists, that is "Active" method. Problem with agile method of learning words is that it is cumbersome and tedious, and you lot doing retain and unless you use information technology in writing sentences to apply the word, very little run a risk is that you increase your lexical size.
Amend Your Vocabulary - VocabMonk is an active learning tool which is personalised and makes sure you grasp the learnt words by applying it. Information technology is lot of fun besides as yous can play vocab challenges with your friends.
Give it a shot!
